Exаm Structure This exаm cоnsists оf twо groups of questions: Group A аnd Group B. You must answer one question from each group: either A-1 or A-2, and either B-1 or B-2. You may answer the questions in either order. You have eight hours to complete this examination. Plan your time carefully. Each essay should require approximately four hours. This is a closed-source examination. You may not consult sources of any kind while writing your essays, including books, articles, notes, websites, electronic resources, AI tools, communication tools, or other sources. Honorlock will record the examination session and monitor the computer activity associated with the examination. Developing Your Essays Your two essays should engage the scholarship and specific texts represented in your three bibliographies, demonstrating both breadth and depth. Strong essays will do more than summarize individual scholars or texts. They will bring authors and arguments into conversation with one another, analyze points of convergence and disagreement, and synthesize these materials in support of your own reasoned scholarly argument. You may wish to use the first 20–30 minutes to select your two questions and consider how you will address them. Before writing, it may be helpful to make a brief outline. You may type an outline at the beginning of your response, but only the essays themselves will be read and evaluated. As you write: Address every part of the question you have chosen. Develop a clear, focused argument and sustain it throughout the essay. Engage a substantial range of relevant scholarship and texts, while giving sufficient attention to the particular arguments and contributions of individual authors. Refer to authors and texts by name and represent their positions accurately and precisely. Do not simply name scholars; explain how their arguments relate to one another and how they contribute to your claims. Analyze and synthesize rather than merely summarize. Make clear the significance of the connections, tensions, agreements, and disagreements you identify. Provide strong warrant for your claims and advance your own reasoned scholarly judgment on the issues raised by the question. Use headings and subheadings where they help organize a complex argument. Reserve time to reread and strengthen your essays, checking especially that you have answered the question fully and that your argument remains clear throughout. Scope of the Examination This is not the time to propose or develop a dissertation project. Do not allow a primary focus on your own research interests to limit your engagement with the breadth and range of scholarship relevant to the questions you have chosen. The prospectus defense is the appropriate setting for developing your proposed area of dissertation research. Time and Breaks You have approximately eight hours total, or approximately four hours per essay. Plan your time accordingly and be prepared to stop writing after approximately eight hours. Use the time available to you fully, including time for planning, drafting, revising, and proofreading. Do not stop prematurely. You may take restroom breaks or brief walks of approximately five minutes as needed. Do not take any electronic device, examination material, or scratch paper with you. Return to the same examination location when the break is complete. You may eat snacks and meals in the room while you write. Technical Problems If you encounter a technical problem: Do not attempt to solve the problem by opening unauthorized websites or applications. Contact the designated examination administrator immediately. Follow the administrator's instructions. Do not start a second attempt unless instructed by the examination administrator.
