Instructiоns Chооse to аnswer either B-1 or B-2. B-1. Philosophy аnd Hermeneutics Prаctical theology may be described as a young discipline with ancient roots. It reaches back to the Scriptures and millennia of conversations cultivating human wisdom in various contexts around the world. Such concerns as these may be found in both ancient and contemporary philosophical systems and inquiry, including the rich wells of wisdom and reflections on practice found in human cultures around the world. Practical theology cannot but take its philosophical underpinnings seriously. Present an in-depth discussion of hermeneutical and methodological questions central to the nature and promise of practical theology. These could include, for example, the “Frankfurt school,” the “postmodern turn,” the “turn to the subject,” the “postcolonial/decolonial turn,” theories of experience, interpretation, and tradition, and broader questions of metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics as well as the dialogue with psychological theory and its relationship with theological anthropology. It certainly includes critical philosophical understandings and approaches that have been dialogue partners with Christian theological thinking over the past two millennia. Identify three major philosophical or hermeneutical schools of thought as they relate to practical theological method and methodology. Evaluate them in light of the tensions between these rival philosophical approaches for practical theological work. How does the contemporary practical theological literature reflect these hermeneutical and methodological dialogue partners? What sorts of philosophical understandings are most critical to approach texts in your Third Bibliography? Offer examples as appropriate, drawing on all the bibliographies and specific texts to illustrate your response. What critical challenges and priorities do these philosophical presuppositions pose for your scholarly agenda? B-2. Contextuality It has been argued that all of theology is contextual, and that practical theology is therefore uniquely privileged because it offers a theology of action that is by nature contextual. Show how contextuality is central to contemporary practical theology. Show how practical theology engages culture and other contextual elements, with reference to particular texts. Discuss this in terms of practices related to the ancient Christian concepts of marturia (including kerygma and didache), koinonia, diakonia, and leiturgia, and the scholarly literature with which they may be associated. Examine the practices you discuss in depth, showing why contextuality is important, or not, for theological work. What philosophical and methodological problems arise at the intersection of theology and anthropology in contextual studies? Contextuality has revealed underlying power relations, including coloniality and other forms of oppression. How might a practical theologian respond to the problematic baggage of these scholarly disciplines? How does contextually engaged and culturally interpretive practical theological understanding promise to advance Christian theological conversations regarding the doctrine of God, Christology, pneumatology, soteriology, eschatology, ecclesiology, and so on? Be specific, focusing especially on areas that relate to the sub-field of your third bibliography, not a potential dissertation topic. Discuss ways that practical theology engages context and related empirical methods. Evaluate the usefulness of these approaches for the practical theological specialization or intersection of specializations named in your Third Bibliography.
