ScenarioLinh, a Vietnamese American sophomore, attends a large university while working part time off campus. As a first-generation college student, she spends most weekdays balancing classes, work shifts, and helping care for her younger siblings at home. In one of her courses, students are assigned a semester-long group project and begin communicating through email and shared documents before meeting face to face.Early in the project, Linh takes the lead organizing the group’s research and statistical analysis. Several group members compliment her work through email and are grateful she has a strong background in quantitative methods. When the group finally meets over Zoom, one student pauses and says, “Oh, I thought Linh was going to be a guy,” while several other group members laugh. As the semester continues, Linh notices other small interactions that begin bothering her. During class discussions, students sometimes compliment her on “speaking English really well,” even though she grew up in Houston. Another student asks where she is “really from.” During group project meetings, Linh’s peers often expect her to take notes or organize schedules while assigning presentation and speaking roles to others.Over time, Linh becomes more careful about what she shares with classmates. She avoids discussing parts of her cultural background because she gets tired of answering questions and dealing with assumptions. At home, however, she feels much more comfortable speaking Vietnamese with family members and participating in cultural traditions.
