When Hаrry аnd Wendy mаrried in 2010, Wendy was a CPA, and Harry was an actоr whо wоrked sporadically. When unemployed, Harry “antiqued.” He would purchase antique furniture, refurbish them, and then sell them online. Harry and Wendy deposited their earnings in a joint account. After the wedding, they moved into Wendy’s condo that she had purchased before the marriage. In 2015, they purchased a home in Century City for $500,000. The title stated that the owners were “Wendy and Harry, husband and wife, as joint tenants.” They used $50,000 that Harry had inherited from his grandmother for the downpayment. They paid the loan payments using money from their joint account. Wendy planned to keep her condo and rent it out. In 2016, Wendy decided that she no longer wanted to be a landlord and sold her condo for $300,000. She deposited the proceeds into a separate bank account titled in her name. In 2020, Harry purchased a painting of French landscape at an auction for $500 using money from the joint account. He gave it to Wendy for their anniversary because she loved art and dreamed of painting in France one day. They hung it in their living room. In 2024, Wendy purchased a Porsche Cayenne for $100,000. She used money from her separate bank account. In March of 2025, Wendy told Harry that she was no longer in love and felt their marriage was at an end. She told him that she would keep the house since he could not afford the monthly loan payments but that he could remain living in the home until he could find an affordable place to live. Harry made dinner whenever Wendy was home, and she sometimes sat down and ate with him. Harry cleaned the entire house on a weekly basis and pleaded with Wendy to go to marriage counseling with him, but she refused. In May of 2025, Harry landed an acting role in a promising Netflix series. To celebrate, he used his first paycheck to purchase an antique secretary desk that he planned to restore for Wendy’s birthday in October. Wendy filed for divorce in August of 2025. At that time, the house was valued at $1,000,000. The antique secretary desk had been appraised at $60,000. The painting was appraised and valued at $100,000. What are Harry’s and Wendy’s respective rights and liabilities, if any, regarding: The Century City house? Discuss. The painting? Discuss. The Porsche? Discuss. The antique desk? Discuss. Answer according to California law.
