Reаd the аrticle "YоuTube" аnd answer the questiоns that fоllow: YouTube (par 1) Have you ever had a great idea for a movie but thought that it would be impossible to distribute it? Have you ever wanted to see concert footage of your favorite band for free? Have you made a home video that you wanted to share? If you had had these dreams in the past, there would not have been a way to make them come true. However, through a new website, YouTube, it is now possible to make movies and videos and share them with anyone who logs on. It is also possible to see videos of bands and other filmmakers for free. What, exactly, is YouTube and how does it work? (par 2) YouTube is a free video sharing website with an interesting history. YouTube was created by three men in their mid-twenties: Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. These three founders were computer scientists who had previously worked for PayPal, the payment service linked with Ebay. They started YouTube on February 15, 2005, with the goal of providing a service that would upload videos using Adobe Flash software. Soon, many people were logging on to YouTube and sharing their home videos or independently produced movies. They also uploaded clips of famous performances, from concerts to ballets to short comedy sketches from shows like Saturday Night Live. YouTube became so popular that in November of 2006, Hurley, Chen and Karim sold the website to Google, the popular search engine, for $1.65 billion. By 2012, YouTube reported that it was getting more than 4 billion hits per day! (par 3) YouTube has continued to be very popular and, as a result, the website has expanded its services. YouTube now has a Vlog, or video log, which members can use. Members can video their daily activities or their thoughts about current events and share them on You Tube with other members. There is also a section for Japanese anime, cartoons for older viewers that are created in Japan. One section of YouTube includes interviews in a variety of languages of celebrities and government officials. Rock bands and other musicians often contribute their latest music videos, and directors will often post movie shorts – short films that would not usually be released in theatres. And, starting in 2011, Google + users could view YouTube through their Chrome web browser. (par 4) There has been an interesting phenomenon that has come out of sites like YouTube and that is the "viral video." A viral video is one that gets passed from one person to the next and whose content is shared and enjoyed by many. Because YouTube is easy to use and navigate, just one click of your mouse can send a video to a multitude of friends, making it so that a video is seen by a vast group of people. Humor seems to be a major component of the viral video but is not necessarily its only or defining characteristic. Viral videos are those that are so widely shared that hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of people see them. Thanks to YouTube and viral videos, many people have become Internet stars. (par 5) One issue that the owners of YouTube have faced is copyright laws. YouTube's policy states that no copyrighted materials can be posted. However, this is a difficult policy to enforce since so many people upload hundreds of videos every day. Advertisers who purchase ad space on YouTube do not seem to be worried about this, though. YouTube continues to be a very profitable website and this most likely will continue for a long time to come. Using the reading selection and your prior knowledge, what are some of the dangers of using YouTube?
