Fоr the rest оf the multiple chоice questions, refer to the bаckground informаtion I posted on Cаnvas, labeled "Exam I Cheat Sheet," and read the excerpt from the newspaper editorial below. Sheriff credits officers with heroic action at Ligertown By Bill Lynn, Bannock County Sheriff Please allow me the opportunity to express some feelings on the events which have taken place at Ligertown. Much has been written in the Journal and much more has been presented by the national and international media. It is easy to see that the stories involving animals are popular, and I think on the whole, the news of the incident has been reported very responsibly, and I thank you for your balance and understanding. I do not want to dwell on the negative, but feel obliged to use the Journal to explain to those who may not understand why we did not "dart" the animals escaping from the compound instead of euthanizing them. The darting of animals is a very precise talent which requires specific skills and very specific equipment. Even the Fish and Game Department usually has only one person per district who is fully trained in the practice, and the equipment is scarce. I suspect many people assume that any rifle could be used and you would just put in a drug dart and shoot. In actuality, the darter must use very exact amounts of numerous compounds, and each dart must be made up individually. Beyond the one dart per shot problem, the type and gender of the animal, the weight of the animal, and many other factors would determine the serums used in each darting. Beyond the above problems, the darter must get to within about 10-20 feet of the animal to be darted and then the animals, if they are lions, take from 15 minutes to 1 1/2-hours to knock down. During this time frame, the lions would have the ability to injure or kill the darter, other officers, or wander downstream to Lava Hot Springs which was less than one mile away. While the lions begin to get lethargic, they are still very aggressive and capable of inflicting injury or death. At the worst time, about 2 A.M., even if we had had a darter with a dart ready, little could have been done, as we had at that time, as many as 14 lions on the loose. And we had them on all four sides of the compound. The fact that we were able to put down the lions without them escaping to town or injuring anyone was a miracle in itself, which we are grateful for. While we wish that darting would have been an option, it simply was not, and the Human Society of the United States as well as the lion experts from California both confirmed that we did all that we could do, and praised us for our response and for maintaining the public well-being. As for the officers who responded to Ligertown that Wednesday night and Thursday morning, let me make comment. During the worst time, we had many brave men and women from numerous agencies, putting their very lives on the line for the public well-being. As for those who would say that it is their job to put their lives on the line, I would say you are right to a point, but no responsible set of individuals, no community, or no person can expect its law enforcement officers to have to deal with an escaping pride of lions and consider it anything but heroic. All of you must know the bravery of those who were in harm's ways, but further you must know that few groups of people in the world could have pulled off this situation with so much class, so much calm, and so much courage. I believe that in life we find heroes very seldom, but when we do, we find them in the most unlikely places. I found so many that night in Lava Hot Springs.
