According to Professor Wayne Hall, a researcher with the National Centre for Youth Substance Use Research, it is possible that people use cannabis, like alcohol, to self-medicate their low mood and anxiety, and that this becomes an unhealthy way of coping with it. Marijuana dependence may then become a depressive or anxiety disorder, worsening the symptoms, and making it more difficult for people to develop better ways of coping with their lives (2020).
