In the аcаdemic wоrld, оne оf the highest ethicаl principles has to do with intellectual honesty. Intellectual honesty can be properly defined as Honesty in the acquisition, analysis and transmission of ideas. * Honesty in the acquisition of ideas has to do with the way in which one acquires knowledge. To pass off the ideas of another person as if they were one’s own without the admission that these ideas are taken from someone else violates honesty in the acquisition of ideas and is generally referred to as Plagiarism. Appropriating ideas, phrases, and sentences from others without acknowledging the source is plagiarism. Another clear violation of honesty in the acquisition of ideas is the copying of someone else’s ideas on an exam and passing them off as one’s own. This clearly is Cheating. If another person does an assignment, writes a paper or even takes an exam for a person and that person passes the work off as being his/her own, that is cheating. When one signs one’s name to an assignment or document which contains ideas taken from others without proper acknowledgement of where the ideas or work has come from, one has violated a trust. Character is that quality in a person which makes a person trustworthy. Once trust has been broken it is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to restore. Honesty is the foundation upon which character is built. Taking a course on-line is putting one’s integrity, one’s character on the line. Most of the work that students do on-line is done without supervision. Students without integrity can easily pass off intellectual work which is not their own. On- line, the bond between professor and student rests primarily upon the trustworthiness, the integrity of the student. To that end, students are asked to sign this Statement of intent to observe Intellectual Honesty in all work undertaken within the framework of the course. Please read and e-sign the following Pledge of Intellectual Honesty * This definition is that taken from On Intellectual Honesty, University of California, Irvine. http://www.ics.uci.edu/~arvo/honesty.html
