SECTION B: Culture аnd Cоmmunity Sоurce A – Integrаting Refugees Since 2018, mоre thаn 1.4 million refugees have arrived in Germany. Many are Syrians escaping the civil war in Syria to find safety in Europe. Syrians now represent the largest Muslim minority in Germany. To help refugees integrate, the German central state and local governments – as well as NGOs – have successfully created a path to employment for the new arrivals. For example, vocational schools have ‘integration classes’, which aim to help refugees get jobs. This includes learning the German language, education and skills training. Learning the language and cultural integration have been difficult issues to overcome, and there have been social tensions in communities. But Syrian refugees have been contributing to life in Germany, such as setting up shops selling ‘chubs arabi’ (Arab pita bread) or opening Arabic libraries that hold ‘Arab-German Literature Days’. This not only helps to boost the local economy but also integrates Syrians into the German way of life, while also maintain their own cultural identity.
