True Stоry: Lаst yeаr I hаd a student whо truly changed me as an instructоr. Each quarter she enrolled in one of my online classes, and each time, around midterms, I received the same email. She explained that her “only living grandma” had suddenly passed away and asked for extensions on her work. The crazy thing is that is was the exact same email sent to me every quarter at mid-terms. I responded with compassion every time. I offered support, encouraged her to stay engaged, and gave her multiple chances to succeed. But despite these efforts, she rarely came into the course space, did not complete assignments, did not take any quizzes or exams, and continued to send similar requests of extensions for the death of her only living grandma. Unfortunately, she ended up withdrawing from each of my courses. I wanted the best for her and did everything I could to support her success. Yet this experience made me realize I needed a clearer policy to ensure fairness and accountability for all students. That is why I created the following guideline: Absences Due to Emergency, Injury, or Death in the FamilyStudents who are unable to complete coursework due to an emergency injury or death in the family must notify the instructor as soon as possible. To be considered for extensions, make-up work, or other accommodations, students are required to provide appropriate documentation. Acceptable forms of documentation include, but are not limited to: Medical documentation such as a doctor’s note, urgent care, or hospital visit summaryAn obituary, funeral program, or official travel itinerary (for example, an airline ticket) related to a funeral or memorial service Requests without documentation may not be granted. The instructor reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of documentation and accommodations.
