CASE STUDY: MARVIN Mаrvin is а 64 y.о. mаn whо was diagnоsed with Guillain Barre Syndrome. He lives at home with his wife, who is 58 and his 24 y.o. daughter. His 27 y.o son lives two blocks away with his wife and their two children, ages 3 and 5. Marvin believes that his life is nearly perfect, as his family is not only close geographically but close emotionally. His pride and joy are his grandchildren with whom he typically visits four to five times a week. He is currently a high school history teacher but plans to retire next year. He plans to spend his time volunteering for the ministries of his church as an ESL tutor, and as a fundraiser. As his wife does not work, she plans to join him in his endeavors. Currently, his leisure time is spent going to the movies, visiting museums, and dining out. He is very social and enjoys being with family and friends. Prior to the onset of Guillain Barre Syndrome, he was independent in all activities of daily living and all aspects of mobility. He was the primary caretaker of the house and yard, often doing the major repairs. His wife took care of all indoor housekeeping and did all of the cooking. He was able to maintain much of his independence, but due to rapid onset of muscle fatigue and weakness (which he thought was a cold or COVID), he had to hire for help for major repairs and the heavier yardwork. He was able to continue to mow the lawn with a rider mower and maintain the small flower beds that line the walkway to his home and had hope things would pass. However, he continued to become ill with what he initially thought again was a cold or COVID. His symptoms spread to his chest, and 4 days ago he was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. He received intravenous antibiotics and respiratory therapy during this time as well as the diagnosis of Guillain Barre. He is now referred to your facility for subacute rehab after his hospitalization, as it is clear that he has had a tremendous decline in function and therefore cannot return home. This hospitalization has left him functionally dependent. He was brought to your facility with orders for rehabilitation services to regain mobility. Other pertinent medical history includes: AFO on Left LE & cane for ambulation HTN Pneumonia 2 yrs. Ago Cataract in L eye s/p hernia repair 20 years ago Medications: Tylenol prn, Tenorim, daily multivitamin
