Research shows the importance of both approaches to the types of depression that college students often encounter. A study conducted by UCLA found that there were “27% fewer attempted suicides when patients participated in talk therapy” (Lowe). With one in four college students suffering from mental health issues, how can a school not provide the proper support needed for the condition? “Studies indicate that as many as 80% of college students live on their college campus” (Tellefsen 104). Being away from home likely means less access to one’s usual doctor, to say nothing of access to mental health care arranged by family. That makes it imperative for colleges to take responsibility to provide help and proper care for these students. If counseling services were provided at every college institution, it could have a positive impact on the lives of students. Moreover, it could benefit the college as well.
