RATS METHOD Fоr the remаining questiоns оn this exаm, you will be using the RATS Method on just one of the two cаses below. Read both, then pick one.  The RATS Questions are worth 33% of your exam grade.   RATS Scenario 1 - Controversial Public Art Your friend Diana is a member of the Ypsilanti City Council—an elected body that is meant to represent the people of the city—and she has an important vote coming up. Recently students at the local middle school and high school were invited to present artwork they created at a gallery in Washington D.C.! They needed money to travel to D.C and attend the event, so a local charitable organization held a fundraiser and raised the money they needed. It was a very exciting opportunity for these young artists… But then COVID happened, and the trip was cancelled. The students were heartbroken that they could not share the art they worked so hard on. However, the school came up with an interesting idea—they suggested printing the students’ art onto vinyl banners and hanging them from lampposts all around the city. This would allow the students to still share their work and feel proud. The charitable organization agreed this was an excellent idea and agreed to fund the banners! However, they need City Council’s approval to hang the banners… and there’s an issue. One student submitted a black and white photograph that appears to depict someone engaged in ‘cutting’—a form of self-harm where a person cuts their own skin. People were concerned that this image was too graphic to hang in public, and would be triggering for people who either used to, or continue to, self-harm. City Council did not want to exclude that artist’s work, so they contacted him and asked if he had any other photos—that were less graphic—that he would like displayed instead. The artist refused to submit a different photo. He reminded them that the theme of the art show was ‘Identity,’ and he felt that the original photo expressed an important part of his identity. He said that he had a message and an artistic vision, and that the original photo must stay! Tonight, City Council must vote on whether or not to hang all the banners, including the controversial photo, or to not hang up any of them. Your friend Diana wants you to help her decide how to vote. What should she do?   RATS Scenario 2 -  Whistleblowing Your friend Diana works for a company that manufactures printers for both home and office. Her job is to test the prototype printers for safety. Their latest model, the X-9000, is set to be released for Christmas and will likely be a top seller. Diana’s tests, however, have shown that a small percentage of X-9000’s will catch on fire if used to print more than 35 pages in a row. She revealed this flaw to her immediate supervisor, who replied that the percentage of potentially faulty printers fell within the company’s standard for acceptable risk. Her boss recommended to the CEO that they release the X-9000 as planned. Diana disagreed with her boss’s decision, and discussed the danger of the X-9000 to her boss’s boss, and that boss’s boss, etc all the way up to the CEO. Each of those bosses agreed with Diana’s boss’s original assessment: the risk that an X-9000 will catch fire is within the company’s standard for acceptable risk. The X-9000 will be released. Diana worries that since the X-9000 will be such a hot seller, that even though the risk of fire is small, there will be some fires. She worries that offices, homes, and maybe even lives will be lost due to the flaw in the X-9000. She is considering going to the press and leaking the story, but a few things worry her about that option. First, when she was hired she signed a "Loyalty Oath"--a document declaring that she would not ‘whistleblow’—that is, she would not leak company information to the press. Second, since she has made such a stink about the X-9000 to so many people in the company, she worries that if she does leak the story, it will be obvious to her bosses that she is the leak. She suspects they will fire her for talking to the press. Diana also worries that if she is fired for whistleblowing, other companies will not want to hire her. Diana could survive for awhile without a job—but it would require that she stop helping pay for little brother to go college, and stop sending her parents money to help them keep their struggling business afloat. What should she do?
