READING SELECTION: Hаppiness Whаt is the significаnce оf Happiness in оur lives? Accоrding to the Dalai Lama, a religious leader, the purpose of our existence is to seek happiness. Surveys have shown that unhappy people tend to be self-focused and are often socially withdrawn and antagonistic. Happy people, in contrast, are generally more sociable and able to tolerate life’s daily frustrations more easily than unhappy people. And, most important, they are more loving and forgiving than unhappy people. Results of some interesting experiments demonstrate that happy people are willing to reach out to help others. In one experiment, test subjects were put in happy moods by unexpectantly finding money in a phone booth. Pretending to be strangers, experimenters then walked by and “accidentally” dropped a pile of papers. The experimenters wanted to see whether the subjects would stop to help the strangers. They discovered that the subjects who were feeling happy were more likely to assist someone than the individuals whose moods had not been lifted by finding money. We can all relate to such experiments. Suppose, for instance, that we are stuck in traffic. After 20 minutes it finally begins to move again. We see someone in another car signaling that he wants to pull ahead of us. If we are in a good mood, we are more likely to slow down and let her in. If we are feeling miserable, our response might be to speed up and close the gap. Writing Prompt: The text discusses the impact of happiness on a person?
