If you do both questions I will only grade your first response. Essay Question #1: This essay question is based on the reading assignments which deal with the issue of capital punishment. Decide who you think has the better arguments from the Primis text, pages 145-168. Earnest van den Haag argues in favor of retaining capital punishment, and Mark Costanzo argues in favor of abolishing it. Keep the following two points in mind as you develop your arguments: 1) It is actually more expensive to execute a person than it is to keep a person in prison for life. (See Google sites under the search “Costs of Capital Punishment” for statistical information.) 2) Capital punishment is not a deterrence to murder. (This point is addressed by both authors.) I bring up these points not to inhibit you from arguing in favor of capital punishment. But to forewarn you that invoking claims of economics or deterrence will not serve to support your view. Essay Question #2: We read two articles on the abortion issue, one from Don Marquis and one from Jane English. State each author’s thesis and at least two arguments given by each author in support of his/her thesis. Decide which author you think provides the best arguments on the issue and defend that person over the other author. Lastly, present your own views on the moral and legal status of abortion and provide arguments to support your opinion. You should also anticipate what critics will say about your views and attempt to answer what others will consider weaknesses of your arguments.
