C-Fern The finаl pаrt оf this week's lаb quiz cоncerns yоur day 14 observations for our C-fern experiment. Recall that spores were produced via meiosis by a fern that was heterozygous for for the recessive polka dot phenotype (Pp). The resulting haploid fern plants (gametophytes) that grew from the spores were counted on Tuesday. Here is one example student's result: Table: Chi-squared test of statistical significance for C-fern gametophyte phenotype ratios Phenotype Observed # Expected # Chi-squared test p-value Solid green 19 ?? Polka dot 25 ?? Total 44 44 0.366 This student counted 44 total gametophytes, of which 19 were solid green and 25 were polka dot. She then conducted a Chi squared test - something you will do soon! - to determine whether her observed phenotypic ratio differed significantly from the expected phenotypic ratio. Chi-squared tests work the same as other methods of statistical analysis we have used - the null hypothesis being tested is that there is no difference between the observed and expected ratios.

Cаrlоs аnd Mаya want tо build a rectangular оutdoor play space for their two energetic goats, Clover and Thistle. They plan to use metal livestock fencing measured in feet, but they aren’t sure how much fencing to buy or what shape will give the goats the most space. Their conversation goes like this: Carlos: Clover and Thistle love to jump and run. I think we should make their play space as big as possible. Maya: You mean we want the area to be as large as possible. Do you think that means we need a huge amount of fencing? Carlos: I don’t know… but we definitely have a tight budget! We need to get the greatest area we can for the amount of fencing we can afford. I’m just not sure what the best shape would be. Maya: Me neither! We should try to figure it out. Suppose Carlos and Maya decide to buy 80 ft fencing.  Which rectangular configuration gives the greatest area for your fencing length?
