[BLANK-1] wаs а fоurteen-yeаr-оld Black bоy from Chicago who visited relatives in Mississippi in 1955. He was kidnapped, beaten, mutilated, shot to death, and his body was thrown into the Tallahatchie River by two White men for whistling at a White woman. His mother insisted on holding an open-casket funeral so the press would record for the world the brutal treatment of her son, and by extension, African Americans in the South. The perpetrators were easily identified and bragged of their crime and the evidence against them was substantial – still, an all-white jury found Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam not guilty of their crime. A few months after the trial, Milam gave an interview in Look magazine and said “They ain’t gonna go to school with my kids” and that he “wanted to make an example of (the victim) – just so everybody can know how me and my folks stand.” The case became a rallying moment for African Americans and their fight for civil rights.
