A long essay is not necessarily a good one, however. --Include a word count (+1 for doing so!) --Have a short introduction and a short conclusion. Do most of your writing in 3-4 body paragraphs. --Be sure to include specific examples from the text and bring in key ideas from class videos. --Do not merely summarize the plot of the work--have ideas, address the prompt directly, and use the details from the text to prove your points. Topic A: Discuss John Smith’s The General History of Virginia as a complex representation of the American experience. In what way does the text portray the new, emerging “American” values? At the same time, how/why is it problematic or complicated to regard Smith’s text as “history”? In your essay, be sure discuss the following in one paragraph each: Smith’s description of the early days of Jamestown, including analysis of his own role. Smith’s narration of the scene involving the death of Emry and Robinson and a subsequent attack on Smith. The scene between Smith and Pocahontas. **Optional body paragraph**: Anything else you think relevant. Conclusion: Assess the value of Smith’s history in forming this concept of the “American” experience. Topic B: Discuss William Bradford’s Of Plymouth Plantation as window into the Puritan experience. How would you characterize these Pilgrims that landed at Plymouth Rock? What were their values? In your essay, be sure to discuss each of the following in one body paragraph: The primary reasons for leaving Holland and coming to the new world; be sure to explain the role the children played in their motivation to start anew. The numerous hardships that they faced, including “Starving Time”; how did they overcome such adversity? How does Bradford depict his own role? The Thomas Granger scene and the more rigid aspects of Puritan culture. **You may add a 4th body paragraph discussing anything else you think important, or you may expand one of the existing body paragraphs to two. Conclusion: How would you characterize the Bradford and the Puritan spirit? What is it that made Plymouth colony a success, despite the adversity? Topic C: Discuss Jonathan Edwards’ Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God as a fire and brimstone sermon. What was the purpose of such a sermon, and what strategies does Edwards use to effect his aim? In your essay, be sure to discuss the following in one paragraph each: The condition of the sinner: why is he being cast to Hell? What does Edwards mean by “natural man” and how does it connect to Calvinist teachings? Figurative language: Identify and analyze similes and metaphors Edwads uses to characterize the sinner, and explain God’s feelings about him. The appeal to the Elect: How does Edwards offer a more hopeful turn in the final paragraphs of his sermon? **You may add a 4th body paragraph discussing anything else you think important, or you may expand one of the existing body paragraphs to two.
