They had been loosely allied with the Soviets and caught them completely by surprise, taking millions of prisoners within the first few weeks of the campaign. The German offensive petered out by December, however, as the Soviets retreated deep into the heart of Russia, employed a Scorched Earth policy of retreat, and the bitter Russian winter arrived. The campaign (the largest invasion in human history) would ultimately become a strategic defeat for Hitler’s forces.
