However, such partnerships necessarily involve a trade-off between increased influence, and decreased autonomy. Otherwise stated, alliances offer both benefits and, in some cases, costs to the states who participate in them. Using the information and examples from your readings, explain the circumstances under which states receive the greatest benefits from participation in an alliance, and the circumstances under which states endure the greatest costs from participation in an alliance. Be sure to populate your discussion with specific examples from your readings so that you "show" your reader that your arguments have support in the real world.
