Thоugh ChаtGPT hаs been оut fоr severаl years already, this is the semester where the use of AI really exploded. I had more AI cheating this semester than in the last 18 months combined. (And it's not just me--my colleagues across the college report the same.) Now, I had already completely changed this course since 2022 as a result of AI. You're not graded on grammar, and I emphasize authenticity over perfection in every piece of writing. I don't want anyone to feel pressured to write "better" than they naturally do at the sentence level; my concern is that you do the work and learn the deeper skills of thinking and self reflection. I have continuously emphasized this policy, yet folks continue to cheat (and then lie about it when they get caught). As a result, I am implementing several changes next semester:Everyone will have to write every single assignment, discussion, journal, etc. in Google Docs and include the link with their submissions so that I can watch replays if necessary.There will be more composition/drafting of papers in Honorlock so that there is some sort of proctoring during the drafting process (which is what would happen if we were in a physical classroom). We are in this murky era where we're all still figuring out how extensively AI will impact our lives in the coming years, so there is no unified vision from anyone, and I know that's confusing for students who get different guidelines from different classes. I know that many of you think the class is too strict and that you should be able to use AI to revise your papers for you. (I won't be doing that for reasons we've discussed over and over again.) Others of you have expressed to me that you are concerned about how many students are cheating in your other classes, and obviously, I share those concerns. And yet I of course understand why some disciplines are embracing AI the same way the "thinking" disciplines are largely skeptical of it, With all of this in mind, please share your thoughts about academic honesty in this course (1 paragraph):What else can the class do to reassure students that "perfection" is not the goal, that any student who shows up and does the work without cheating is probably going to pass, regardless of their skill level?
