Apply yоur knоwledge оf the HPG аxis to this phаrmаcology correlation (question 2 of 2): In treating certain types of breast and prostate tumors, specifically ones that grow in response to the gonadal sex steroid hormones estrogens and androgens, respectively, there are a few common medications that are given in both cases. One of these drugs, which is given in a continuous manner, is differentiated by all other drugs by first causing an initial increase or "flare" in gonadotropins, but then soon cause the anterior pituitary to become insensitive via receptor down regulation, which ultimately leads to a decrease in gonadotropins. Thus, this drug indirectly decreases estrogens and androgens from the gonads (ovaries and testes, respectively), which helps prevent tumor growth and cancer development. Essentially, this drug mimics a hormone that is usually secreted in pulsatile manner to prevent this, but is being given daily in a high dose to actually induce this process. From the drugs described mechanisms of action, we can hypothesize the medication must be a/an (hint: this would not be effective in female hormone replacement therapy, only in male):
