As you begin, look for similarities in the texts’ subject and theme; for the paper to succeed, the poems must have a solid basis for comparison (you are NOT noting the differences) Do not waste time simply pointing out the differences between the two texts, as these differences will be obvious to the common reader. Stay focused on analyzing how and why two poems can communicate a common theme despite these differences Choose one poem from our lectures and one, undiscussed poem from the anthology (your big textbook). You have the freedom to choose any poem from your anthology, as long as only one of the poems you write about is one that we have discussed in lectures. Any essay that does not meet these two requirements—for instance, writing about only one poem, writing about fiction, writing about a poem not included in our textbook or reading list, or writing about two poems assigned for class discussion—will earn an automatic zero The essay must be 750 to 1000 words in length, not including the headings, title, or Works Cited page You must use a minimum of 2 short quotations Remember that every time you use source material, it must have an in-text citation Demonstrate that you understand and can apply the concepts and terms for reading and interpreting poetry that we have studied. Do not waste time summarizing the plot for your readers. Your intended audience is a group of readers who are familiar with both of the texts you have chosen. You should assume your reader is familiar with the authors and works selected, but has not thought about it in the interesting way that you have. Your tone,vocabulary, diction, and so on should always be appropriate for academic writing and should respect the diversity of your audience.
