Imаgine yоu wоrk fоr Amаzon аnd your team just tested an updated version of the Amazon smart phone app by randomly selecting a subset of App user to push the updated version while keeping most customers as control. The results indicate that sales over the two week test period were 2% higher for the treatment group with the new app than the control. Even though only a small percent of Amazon App users were randomly selected for the treatment, there are so many Amazon users that the 95% confidence interval around the estimated treatment effect is pretty tight, ranging from 1% to 3%. Your boss has now asked you: “Well does this new design affect our higher-volume customers differently than our lower-volume customers? Should we think about rolling out the update to everyone or targeting it?” Write a set of instructions for a new analysts on your team for what they should do to provide these results for you to share with your boss. You should not be proposing a new experiment, but rather the steps to analyzing the data already collected from this experiment to provide the analysis to your boss’ question. Be clear and specific: this is a new analyst and they don’t know how to fill in the gaps. Give them the steps they need to do to produce the analysis of the heterogeneous treatment effects that you want to see. Note: some of the details here are a judgment call and will require you to make some assumptions – just be clear about those, as I’m looking for how you would think about approaching this.
