He outlawed the communist party, shut down state newspapers, and reassigned Soviet powers to the Russian Federation. His policy of “breakneck liberalization” caused economic turmoil in Russia, however. This shock therapy led to soaring prices and collapsing production; state monopolies became private monopolies that cut production and raised prices. Sixteen years after he took office, the life expectancy in Russia had dropped by ten years.
