In the first week оf the cоurse, yоu will leаrn аbout the wаy fiction influences our lives. Not only does fiction have the power to change the way we think, feel, and understand things as an individual, it can change a culture’s thought process and impact profound social change. Stories about issues, ideas, problems, or values that we can see in the world around us gives readers the opportunity to empathize with other experiences and see the world from a different perspective, and this can have powerful results. With this in mind, choose any fictional story in any format (book, film, tv show, comic series, video game, etc.) that has an important message that you think everyone should hear. In your sample, you should explain the ideas in this story you think are important for people to be exposed to and explain why they are important. You are welcome to use your own experience or perspective on this story as part of your essay’s support. Your sample should be at least 400 words with an introduction paragraph, two or more body paragraphs, and a conclusion. While you are not scored for grammar, mechanics, or writing quality, you should take care with your sample and make sure it is the best representation of your average writing style within the given time. You are not permitted to navigate away from this page, stop the screen recording, or produce any part of your sample outside this proctored window. Failure to adhere to these proctoring guidelines will invalidate your sample and require you a new attempt and diagnostic prompt. You may brainstorm, outline, or plan your ideas inside the textbox with your sample if this is something you typically do when writing. When you’re ready to complete the essay, start a new line with the words WRITING SAMPLE to separate any prewriting notes from your official diagnostic writing sample.
