Make sure to follow the format for a work from an anthology; you should be using the textbook to read and document the poem. Both sides of the notecard must be shown clearly to the camera during the environment check. The textbook cannot be used during the timed essay; the notecard is the only material that is permitted. These quotes must be selected and prepared beforehand; if you have already opened the essay submission link, it is too late to open the textbook and choose quotes. Use of the textbook during the essay is not permitted. Essay Topic In the poem “Ozymandias,” the author describes a powerful ruler whose achievements have not lasted. Although Ozymandias wanted to be remembered as great, the poem shows that power and pride do not last forever. Write an essay explaining how the author shows that power is temporary. In your essay: Identify one idea the poem communicates about power or pride Explain what happens in the poem that supports this idea Describe how the author uses description or imagery to help readers understand this message Before you attempt the essay, prepare by doing the following: Which words or images in the poem help show the idea you're going to discuss? How can you explain this clearly in your own words? Choose your quotes from the poem accordingly. Remember to write down the line number(s) for each quote so that you can include correct MLA in-text citations for the quotes you use. You must use the assigned poem to support your points. This required source should be from the assigned reading itself, NOT the introduction by the editors or the course materials. Quote this primary source at least once in each body paragraph of the essay. You might need more than three quotes from the readings to support your argument strongly, and this is fine. Four are permitted. Review materials on grammar, punctuation, literary analysis, and MLA documentation can be found in the Start Here module. Use these to prepare for the essay and get your notecard ready as needed. You will not be able to access these materials during the essay itself. Use the most current version of MLA formatting and documentation. What a Successful Essay Will Do A successful essay will: Clearly state the thesis in the introduction Use examples from the poem to support that idea Explain the examples instead of just repeating the poem Stay focused on the poem throughout the essay and avoid discussing works not assigned in the course Use clear sentences and organized, well developed paragraphs Include a Works Cited entry at the end of the essay Academic Integrity Statement This is a proctored writing assignment. Students must work independently and may not use notes, websites, or AI tools. The essay must reflect the student’s own understanding of the poem. Significant Errors That Will Cause a Student’s Final Essay to Earn a Zero Failing to follow the required protocol for Honorlock testing (e.g., failing to complete a satisfactory environment check, having additional devices present, having other persons present, leaving the testing location during the testing session, referring to prewritten materials, not keeping your face completely visible during all of the testing session, talking aloud, failing to keep video and audio on for the duration of the essay, or any other suspicious behavior) Cheating in any form (e.g., recycling work from previous semesters, submitting work written by other people, using online paper-writing services, getting unauthorized assistance on your work) Copying and pasting material into the answer box Evidence of using AI in any way to generate/review/improve your work (Note: Electronic services that help you improve your writing by making suggestions for rephrasing and corrections are a type of AI.) Submitting an essay that does not focus on the required topic/prompt Submitting an essay that does not meet the minimum length requirement of 600 words Failing to submit an essay prior to the last date that late work will be accepted for this assignment Important Reminders and Requirements Give your essay an original, specific title that is correctly capitalized. Center the title. Do not bold it, italicize it, put it in quotes, or put it in larger font. Since you will be typing your response into an answer box in your online course, you don’t need a header or heading for this essay. You can single-space the paragraphs in this assignment. There is no need to change the spacing. However, it is essential to indent the first line of each paragraph. Also, double-space between paragraphs (by hitting the "enter" key twice) so that it is clear where each new paragraph begins. Essays that do not have clearly indicated indivual paragraphs will be penalized. The essay is formatted as a one-question essay test. This essay is graded manually by the instructor, so you won’t immediately receive a grade. This assignment is timed. You will have 90 minutes to complete the essay. You cannot refer to a prewritten rough draft or thesis while writing this essay. Using notes, files, previous drafts, or other materials while writing the essay is not permitted. Your work area should be clear of any written materials or extra computers/monitors. No cell phones or other digital devices should be present in the testing area. Avoid using contractions as well as first and second person pronouns. Count to ensure that every paragraph in your essay includes at least five sentences. Pay close attention to punctuation, sentence structure, agreement, spelling, and other mechanical aspects of the essay. Think about the assigned readings, form your own opinions, and support your ideas by selecting quotes from the assigned readings. Quote--don't paraphrase—the sources you use for support. Additionally, use variation with your quotes. In one point, you may just use a few words from the quote, whereas in another you may use an entire sentence. Do not use blocks of quotes unless necessary. When you discuss the literature, use present or historical tense (for example, "Crevcoueur states," or "reveals," or "defines"--not "said" or any other past tense verb). However, when youdiscuss his life, for example, you may write, "he lived and died" (past tense verbs). Every sentence that contains any source information, whether you've directly quoted or paraphrased it, should be followed by a proper in-text citation. Failure to do so, even if you've included an entry for that work on the Works Cited page, results in plagiarism and MAJOR penalties.

Your webcam video and your screen will be recorded as part of the exam proctoring. You may only have the Canvas page with the exam open on your computer or you will be flagged for cheating. Make sure your external webcam shows your entire workspace from the side, including your area where you are writing, your face profile, all paper and materials used, your computer screen, and your calculator. You will receive a zero on the exam if you do not have a properly set up external webcam showing your entire workspace for the entire time you take the exam. You are allowed one 5 minute break during the exam, please do not leave your webcam viewing area more than once or for more than 5 minutes. Directions: You can view the exam below, but you may not download or copy the exam or take pictures or screenshots of it. You must write all work, graphs, and solutions on your own paper. You do not have to rewrite the questions on your paper unless you want to. Complete the exam and submit it by following the submission guidelines below. Use an app or a scanner to take pictures of your solutions and then turn it in with the following conditions: One PDF file with all the pages, see Directions to uploading assignments into Canvas as a PDF Problems clearly labelled in sequential order Lines drawn between each problem and all final answers boxed Vertical orientation of the pdf - please check orientation of the scanned pdf before turning in, sometimes the scanning apps inexplicably turn the scans sideways.
