They also claimed English wheat would produce only sixteen bushels per acre, but we have harvested thirty. In addition, no place has more white and blue marble for improving the land, if only we had carpenters to build carts and plows, and skilled workers to train cattle to pull them. Although we have tried to accomplish these things, our lack of experience has made little successful except the planting of tobacco. Yet many people became so greedy to produce large amounts of tobacco that they produced poor-quality crops. Furthermore, many dishonest tobacco dealers in England would sell bad tobacco as if it were high-quality Spanish tobacco (“Verinas”), while whatever trash remained would be labeled as coming from Virginia.
