The horses are very acclimated to humans—they are often found blocking traffic and looking for handouts. Another unique feature of the island is that it is home to what most people call “Sika deer,” which are actually more closely related to elk than to deer. They stand about waist high and look a lot like young White-tailed deer. The horses were put on the Island by local farmers who were trying to avoid paying taxes on their livestock. Over the years, horses escaped and formed a herd, and they have become the leading tourist attraction at the park. The Sika deer were most likely brought to the island years ago by the Boy Scouts as part of some sort of agricultural project. As time has progressed, both species have had negative impacts on the relatively fragile barrier island ecosystem, causing increased erosion, the depletion of dune grasses, and numerous other problems. In response to this, the National Park Service has pursued two different methods of population control: it allows hunting of the Sika deer, and uses fertility drugs to regulate the population of the horses.
