At the end оf the Nоvel, Life оf Pi, our hero, Pi Pаtel, is interviewed by investigаtors from the Jаpanese Ministry of Transport. They want to to know the whole story of his survival at sea. From this interview, two different possible stories emerge: one is that Pi was on the lifeboat with his mother, a sailor, and a cannibalistic cook. The other story is the main narrative in which Pi is originally joined on the boat by Richard Parker the tiger, Orange Juice the orangutan, a zebra, and a hyena. When confronted by the investigators about the two very different stories, Pi asks them, "Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without animals?"
