Before he was the governor and while he was running for Congress in 2017, Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery for an incident in which he body-slammed a journalist to the ground and then punched the journalist repeatedly. This incident took place at Gianforte's campaign headquarters in front of campaign staff and other journalists. According to witnesses at the campaign headquarters in Bozeman, journalist Ben Jacobs for the Guardian newspaper and website approached Gianforte and asked him his response to the Congressional Budget Office report on a health care law. Gianforte is a former health-care company executive. Gianforte refused to answer Jacobs' question but Jacobs, with a recording device held near Gianforte's face, persisted and repeated his question. Gianforte then threw Jacobs to the ground and jumped on him to punch him several times while saying, "I'm sick and tired of this!" Jacobs' glasses were broken in the incident. Witnesses said Jacobs never became violent or threatened violence. After the incident, Jacobs walked away and Gianforte went to meet with sheriff deputies. Eventually, Gianforte was arrested, booked into jail for a short time before bailing out and then charged with a misdemeanor. Gianforte's campaign released a press release giving a false version of the events in which Gianforte said the "liberal media" was out to get him and blaming Jacobs for the attack. Gianforte claimed that Jacobs grabbed Gianforte's wrist and caused both of them to fall. Notwithstanding widespread condemnation for his violent behavior, Gianforte was elected to Congress and served there from 2017 to 2021. In 2021 he was elected governor of Montana. After his guilty plea, Gianforte was sentenced to 40 hours of community service and to pay a fine. He also agreed to donate $50,000 to a nonprofit organization called the Committee to Protect Journalists. In return, Jacobs agreed not to file a civil lawsuit for damages against Gianforte. Some time after the attack, former President Trump held a rally in which he praised Gianforte for punching the journalist. Trump mimicked a body slam, eliciting laughter from his supporters in the audience. Historians said it was the first time a president of the United States had praised a violent attack on a journalist on U.S. soil. Even though he admitted to the attack and apologized at the time of his guilty plea, Gianforte subsequently stated publicly that he still blamed Jacobs for the incident. Trump, who frequently called journalists "enemies of the people" and attacked them on Twitter and in rallies for pointing out his lies, has never apologized for condoning the attack on Jacobs.
