Mаybel Mаrtin is PhD student аnd educatiоnal psychоlоgy researcher at American University. She is interested in conducting an observation of a fifth-grade classroom taught by Ms. Lopez at Thomas Elementary School. Maybel has set up a meeting with Ms. Lopez to discuss interest in observing her class. She wants to understand how culturally responsive teaching improves learning outcomes among elementary school students. On the day of her meeting with Ms. Lopez, Maybel walks into the fifth-grade classroom and notices it is colorful, welcoming, and greatly influenced by cultural diversity. Ms. Lopez has posters on the wall of prominent leaders, artists, and writers such as Martin Luther King, Frida Kahlo, and Emily Dickinson. After shaking Ms. Lopez’s hand, Maybel starts the conversation by asking Ms. Lopez about her teaching philosophy. Ms. Lopez responds by stating, “I believe in respecting and celebrating each of my students’ individual differences, I also like to create lessons that help to motivate each of them to become independent learners. I know no student learns the same way. So, I tend to allow them to express their knowledge in unique ways. I also want to challenge my students. However, I am learning that some activities may be a bit more complex than they are prepared to do. There is so much they still don’t know about themselves and the world around them. I want to always make sure that I am the best teacher I can be. I am hoping your research study can provide insight on how I can do that.” Maybel is excited to know that Ms. Lopez is willing to receive feedback. She takes out her blue research notebook and begins to jot down notes. Question Set 1: 1. Help Maybel to define what is educational psychology for Ms. Lopez by referencing two (2) well-known educational psychology theorist/researchers and their contribution to the field. 2. Next, based on what Maybel has observed walking into the classroom, and from hearing Ms. Lopez’s teaching philosophy, define culturally responsive teaching and describe how Ms. Lopez implements culturally responsive teaching practices in her classroom. Question Set 2: 1. Next, Ms. Lopez mentioned not wanting to introduce activities that are too complex. a) Explain Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development by first describing the adaptation process. Next, reference each stage of cognitive development with a brief explanation of a child’s capabilities within each stage. b) Identify what stage of cognitive development Ms. Lopez’s students are currently in. i) Next, discuss why it may be difficult for the students to understand themselves and the world around them. c) Compare and contrast Jean Piaget's Cognitive Development Theory and Lev Vygotsky's Social-Cultural Theory. i) Next, share how the Zone of Proximal development is a useful construct for Ms. Lopez to use when she is presenting new information to learners.
