Instructiоns: Fоr this in-clаss essаy аssignment, yоu will write an analytical essay on one of the following poems by Pablo Neruda: “La United Fruit Co.” "Ode to Salt" You have already read both of these poems, and they have been provided to you in hard copy both in English and Spanish. Your essay must incorporate both a text-based approach and a context-based approach in your analysis.   Central Prompt: How does Pablo Neruda use poetic techniques and historical context to shape the meaning of the poem you have chosen? Analyze both the text itself and its broader social or political implications in your response. Your response should focus on making an argument about the meaning (or meanings) of the poem.   Guidelines for Analysis: Text-Based Approach – Focus on the language, form, structure, and literary devices of the poem. For background, draw from our previous reading on text-based analysis.  The main focus should be how form conveys meaning within the poem. Context-Based Approach – Situate the poem within historical, social, or political contexts. For background, draw from our previous reading on context-based analysis. If writing on “La United Fruit Co.,” consider what specific historical events and contexts the poem references. How does understanding these references reveal specific meanings within the poem? If writing on "Ode to Salt": How does Neruda’s poetic style reflect his ideals and commitments?  What historical contexts are useful in interpreting the poem?   Essay Requirements: Your response should be well-organized with a clear thesis statement and supporting textual evidence. Your response should have at least a short (2-4 sentences) introduction, 2 body paragraphs, and a short (2-4 sentences) conclusion. Feel free to go over these minimums. Use textual evidence (in the form of short quotes or discussion of specific details) to support your analysis. Analyze the quotes after you provide them (explain what they show, what is meaningful about them...). It is fine if you write in English about the poem in English translation. If you are able to read the Spanish translation, feel free to reference it. While your own response should be written in English, you are not required to translate the quotations, though feel free to do so.  You may not use outside sources. Attempting to open a browser window or a document on your computer counts as Academic Dishonesty in the same way that attempting to read someone else's exam and get the answers does. You will have 75 minutes to complete the essay. Be sure to submit your response when you are done.  The icon below this text box that looks like a diagonal line with an arrow on both ends will enlarge this text box to fit your entire screen.
