Essay Question Number One: In your own words, present an analysis of Descartes’ Meditations. Use the following questions to help you organize your thoughts on this matter. Why did Descartes start out with doubting? What is methodic doubt? What kinds of statements did Descartes doubt (hint: senses, body, math) and what reasons did he give for doubting them. Why is the cogito beyond all doubt? Once at the cogito what two proofs for God’s existence did Descartes formulate. After proving God exists how did he prove matter (extension) exists? How did Descartes account for our possibility to err even as the product of a divinely perfect intelligence? What three substances resulted from these metaphysical arguments? What problem arose from his analysis of reality into these three substances, and what was Descartes solution to this problem? Was this a good solution? Conclude your essay with an analysis of the distinction Hume makes between matters of fact and relations of ideas and contrast that with Kant’s analysis of the three types of judgments we make. In this concluding section use your own unique examples to further clarify your analysis whenever possible. Essay Question Number 2Begin this essay by describing the reasons Descartes gave for doubting his senses, body, and mathematics in his first Meditation. Then turn you attention to the empiricism of David Hume. Start out by describing the distinction Hume makes between impressions and ideas. Then explain the four ways Hume thinks the mind manipulates ideas and provide your own unique examples of each. Then discuss Hume’s distinction between matters of fact and relations of ideas, provide your own unique examples of each, discuss how that relates to his skeptical conclusions regarding causation. Then contrast this with Kant’s critical philosophy. Start out by describing Kant’s analysis of the three types of judgments we make and provide your own unique examples of each type. How is the synthetic a priori judgment different than anything Hume claimed was possible? Explain in your own words what is meant by Kant's Copernican Revolution in philosophy? How does the mind structure experience? Provide examples of structuring. What is the difference between phenomena and noumena? Provide your own unique examples of each. What did Kant mean by the antinomies of reason? Provide your own unique examples. What did Kant mean by regulative concepts? Provide examples. Finally, describe in your own words how Hume and/or Kant criticize rational proofs for the existence of God?
