Some may this the community college is just the easier and cheaper alternative to a four year. That the "community" in community college is only there since it is primarily attended by students local to the town. But we must understand that community is not just about location or shared spaces but inclusion, support, opportunity, and connection. Community colleges function as vital community members by providing support to marginalized students with easy access, personalized student support, and a platform for community centered self-expression. One of the most important ways community colleges embody community is through accessibility and inclusion. Unlike many four year institutions, community colleges often have open admissions policies. This means that students from a wide range of academic, social, and economic backgrounds are given the opportunity to pursue higher education. This is possible largely because of enhanced technology and bigger support programs. Community colleges recognized that there was a need in the education space. Enhancing accommodations, make access to financial aid easier and having more flexible scheduling options are a few ways community colleges have broadened their access. In her article, author Voncella McCleary- Jones stated, "The open admissions policy at many two year post-secondary institutions enables students with learning disabilities to access that environment easily" (McCleary- Jones 46). The author was explaining that because of community colleges easy accessibility, students, especially those with learning disabilities, can access college environments that otherwise might felt out of reach. This reflects a broader understanding of community as something that actively removes barriers rather than reinforcing them. When students who may have been excluded elsewhere find a place where they are welcomed, college becomes more than a school. That safe space becomes a space of belonging. In this sense, community colleges challenge the idea that higher education is only for a select few. They instead promote a more democratic idea of learning. If we look further beyond open access, community colleges also solidify their role as community members by offering an array of programs tailored to an individual students needs. Community is not just about being included. It is about being supported once your there. The author McCleary-Jones also stated, "Needed support may involve a range of services, such as "helping students with disabilities become involved in clubs, organizations, internship, and learning opportunities..." (McCleary-Jones 46).The author was explaining the different ways community colleges have accommodated students with learning disabilities. When taken into account that these schools are not required to be this inclusive, it goes to show how above and beyond community colleges go for the community. Many students who attend community colleges balance school and work, family responsibilities, or financial challenges. Recognizing this, community colleges often provide flexible sceduling, academic advising, tutoring services, and career counseling. With these resources available, student can navigate the educational journeys in ways that fit their unique circumstances. To take it a step further, community colleges create platforms for self expression. This allows students to express themselves where they otherwise couldn’t. Many students who attend community colleges come from backgrounds that are underrepresented in traditional academic spaces. By providing opportunities for involvement in clubs, organizations, and campus events, community colleges give students the chance to share their voices, identities, and different perspectives. The Columbus Education Justice Coalition made a video which stated, " Each community school is shaped by the needs and strengths of the people it serves" (Columbus Education Justice Coalition 14:51). This group understood that all systems, no matter the size or complexity, requires support to continue to be upheld. In schools, when students are able to express themselves, they help shape the culture of the institution. The idea of schools needing students support to thrive highlights the dynamic relationship between the college and its students. rather than imposing a fixed identity, community colleges evolve based on the Individuals who make up their population.
