Pleаse reаd the Animаls and Experimental Design sectiоn in Lu et al. (2025) belоw. Which оf the following statements is FALSE? Lu Q, Tian X, Chen R, Qin J, Wang X, Xie S, Xu Y. Effects of increasing doses of red yeast rice polyphenol extract on apparent digestibility, antioxidant activity, milk production, and fatty acid in lactating dairy goats. J Anim Sci. 2025 Jan 4;103:skaf167. doi: 10.1093/jas/skaf167.  Animals and experimental design All experimental procedures and criteria were approved by the Subcommittee of Experimental Animal Ethics of Guizhou University (approval no. EAE-GZU-2023-E033). The feeding trial was performed at Wanyuan Agriculture Co., Ltd (Xishui, China; 28.25°N, 106.16°E) during the summer season. At the beginning of the experiment, each animal body weight was weighed by an electronic scale (ZF8003-C12; Suzhou Zhengfeng Electronic Technology Co., Ltd, Kunshan, China). The milk production was gradually decreased of dairy goats in the late lactation period, which required nutritional strategies to enhance the milk yield (Never, 2015). Various previous studies have shown that dietary addition of plant polyphenols could alleviate OS status and enhance antioxidant and immune functions, and then increase milk production of late-lactating dairy goats (Muklada et al., 2020; Delgado-Pertíñez et al., 2021). Therefore, a total of 32 multiparous lactating (182.5 ± 3.56 DIM) with similar body weight (42.58 ± 4.52 kg) of Chinese Guanzhong dairy goats were blocked in terms of milk yield (1517 ± 51 g/d) were randomly allocated into 4 treatments (8 goats per treatment) by employing a randomized complete block design. All goats were accommodated indoors in 1 of 4 slatted floor pens, and each goat was housed in an individual clean pen for the duration of the experiment. Pens were balanced for milk yield. The 4 diets were as follows: the control groups were fed a basal diet (CON), and treatments 1 (LR), 2 (MR), and 3 (HR) were supplemented with 1, 2, and 3 g/kg RYRE in total mixed ratio (TMR), respectively. The RYRE was purchased from Xi’an Xinlu Biotechnology Co., Ltd (Xi’an, China). RYRE was extracted from the powder of RYR. In brief, RYR was removed the impurities to ensure the purity of the extract, and ground, and then passed through a 1-mm sieve to prepare RYR powder. RYR powder was extracted 3 times with the ethanol extraction method. Next, the extraction was evaporated to dryness by rotary evaporation at 37 °C under reduced pressure. The RYRE was a brownish-red powder, and the polyphenol contents of RYRE are listed in Table 1. Additionally, the nutritional requirements for dairy goats according to the NRC (1981), and the ingredients consisted of alfalfa, peanut vine, green corn straw, broadbean seed capsule, concentrate supplement, and the ingredient and nutrient composition of the basal diet are listed in Table 2. The RYRE was first incorporated into the compound premix evenly, and then mixed well with the concentrate supplement. In addition, these concentrate supplement was prepared 5 d before feeding, stored at 4 °C in sealed containers, and then thoroughly mixed daily with the roughage to prepare the TMR before feeding to ensure that the RYRE added to the feed is ingested by goats. Concentrate supplement contained 59% corn, 10.5% soybean meal, 6.2% cottonseed meal, 23% wheat bran, 0.5% salt, 0.3% limestone, and 0.5% compound premix. The TMR was prepared daily by a mobile farm mixer (9JGL-24; Hebei Youmu Technology Group Co., Ltd, Shijiazhuang, China). The experimental period was 10 wk, including a preparation period of 2 wk, all goats were gradually adapted to their respective diet during the first 5 d by increasing daily allowance by 20% each day to achieve 100% feeding of the net ration at the end of 5 d during the preparation period. The formal experimental period was 8 wk, which included 2 period: the first period was 1 to 28 d, and the second period was 29 to 56 d. In addition, the blood and ruminal fluid were collected at 1, 28, and 56 d during the formal experimental period. The goats were milked twice daily (0400 and 1500 hours), and the diet was provided at 0630 and 1730 hours every day, and allowed approximately 10% refusal. In addition, the refusal was collected daily throughout the formal experimental period to calculate the dry matter intake (DMI) at the end of the experiment. The experimental diets along with water were available ad libitum throughout the entire experimental period.
