A pair of Pokemon - orange female and grey male - start a family. Geneticists are interested in this trait, so they study the descendants these two individuals. This tree is shown above. Circles are XX females; squares are XY males. Shaded individuals are grey; unshaded individuals are orange. Orange appears to be [b] to grey. The gene that determines orange vs grey color appears to be [a]. If this were a real species that originally had only the orange allele, why would the allele for grey color have appeared?
