Imаgine thаt yоu аre watching a film. The mоvie оpens with a woman sitting on a bench with a grim expression on her face. Cue the music. The first slow and sad notes play in a minor key. The woman turns her head and sees a man walking toward her. The music slowly gets louder, and it sends fear running down your spine. You sense that the woman is in danger. Now imagine that you are watching the same movie with a different soundtrack. As the scene opens, the music is soft and soothing. You see the woman on the bench and sense her loneliness. Suddenly, the music swells. The woman sees a man walking toward her. The pace of the music picks up. You feel that this is a happy moment. Music can evoke emotional responses. It elicits laughter, sadness, or fear. Are these types of musical cues universal? In 2009, a team of psychologists studied people's reactions to music that they'd never heard.
