There are five text boxes on the page for submitting your answers. Submit one answer in each text box.   For each of your five selected arguments, include the following in a response of at least 6-8 sentences:   Identify which logical fallacy is used in the argument. You may use each fallacy only once. Explain how you know that this fallacy is being used in the argument. Explain what the person speaking in the quote is trying to persuade people of by using this logical fallacy. What does this person want other people to think? Explain why this argument is insufficient for proving their point. What would they need to actually provide in order to sufficiently prove their point?   These are the logical fallacies you may choose from:   Ad Hominem, Straw Man, Either/or (aka: false dilemma), False Analogy, Slippery Slope, Circular Argument, Genetic Fallacy, Non Sequitur Option A. This Politician Speaking About Tax Policy “Sure, we could go with Senator Nelson’s idea to extend tax cuts to people who earn below 50k a year, but should we really take advice on tax brackets from a guy who cheated on his wife back in the 80s?”   Option B: This Debate About The Meat Industry Student 1: The factory farming of animals is immoral and cruel. They are often confined in tiny cages in the dark and they are pumped full of hormones and antibiotics. Because of this, I believe we should campaign for stricter regulations on the meat industry. Student 2: Oh, so you want to force us all to eat nothing but tofu and kale? People like you are always telling us what to do. You can eat rabbit food if you want, but you have no right to take my bacon away from me.    Option C: A Senator Making an Argument About Carbon Emissions Control “My colleagues have a choice. They can either vote for my bill to reduce carbon emissions and save the planet, or they can vote against it and watch their children choke on filthy, polluted air.”   Option D: This Quote From a Blog About Parenting “You wouldn’t give your dog or your plants juice with high fructose corn syrup and preservatives in it, so why would you give it to your child?”   Option E: This Argument About Medicinal Marijuana “We cannot grant doctors the right to prescribe medicinal marijuana, because that will open the doors for doctors to prescribe anything they want to anyone. Everyone knows marijuana is a gateway drug. Pretty soon they’ll be prescribing heroin and meth because their patients demand them.”   Option F: This Dialogue Between a Student and a College Admissions Counselor: Student: “Why was my application to the college denied?” Admissions Counselor: “Your application was denied because it was not deemed acceptable to be approved.”   Option G: This Restaurant’s Owner’s Health Claims “My Italian restaurant is across the street from the hospital, and we get a lot of doctors at lunchtime. Most of them order the fettuccine alfredo and breadsticks with extra butter sauce. They all tell me it’s the best in town. So, fettuccine alfredo must have amazing health benefits if all the doctors eat it   Option H: This Tobacco Industry Lobbyist “Can we really trust the science behind the claim that smoking causes cancer? Did you know that the first scientific paper to make this claim was published by a German doctor in 1939? Remember, in 1939, Germany was controlled by Hitler and the Nazis, so can we really believe health claims that came from people working for Hitler?”
