There are two ways to fix the machine when it clogs and stops operating: someone can crawl inside the machine and use their hands or a small tool to pick off clumps of food that caused the clog, or the machine can be switched to run in reverse mode which sometimes removes the clog on its own. When Montemayor and Gray’s machine clogged, Montemayor climbed inside the machine to manually attempt to remove the clogged food. Gray had no idea that Montemayor was inside the machine because he could not see him, and he manually switched the machine to run in reverse and started the machine up to see if it would unclog itself on its own. Because Montemayor was inside the machine when Gray started it up, Montemayor was crushed by the machine and had to have both of his legs amputated. Montemayor later sued Sebright Products, Inc., the company that manufactured the machine, in a strict liability product defect lawsuit claiming the product was defective because it was designed to allow someone to start it up in reverse mode without being able to see whether anyone was inside the machine attempting to manually remove a clog.
