Essаy # 1--Exemplificаtiоn Essаy Prоmpt: Having investigated a definitiоn of success via video, readings, and discussion posts, write a 5-paragraph essay examining three characteristics of success necessary for a specific category of people. The introduction should begin with a hook (could be general statements about nouns in thesis statement) and move to give background information on the topic. The last sentence of the introduction should be a thesis statement that indicates the category chosen and the three characteristics that will be examined. Be sure that you examine the characteristics in your paper in the same order in which you list them in your thesis statement. Aim for complexity of thought in your body paragraphs and avoid simplistic or overly-obvious ideas. Build your essay by making claims about 3 essential characteristics of success for the category of person you have chosen. The body paragraphs should begin with a clear topic sentence naming a characteristic, and they should end with a summation sentence that wraps up the topic and draws the paragraph to a close. Body paragraphs should be developed following the pattern of general proof, specific proof and commentary. The conclusion should summarize the main idea of the essay and remind readers of the importance of understanding the category. Also, remember that you need a thesis application. How do these three characteristics apply to other areas of life? Audience: Write for a general audience and do not directly address your reader. Therefore, avoid using phrases such as “you should” or “you would.” Avoid the word “you” all together. (Using "you" is called writing in second person, and it should be avoided in college-level writing.) Tone: Take on a voice of authority and write as a matter of fact rather than statements of opinion. Avoid phrases such as “I believe” or “I feel.” Avoid referring to yourself at all. (Referring to yourself in your writing is called writing in first person, and it is also usually avoided in college-level writing.) Reminders: Body paragraphs should be between 7-12 sentences.Introduction and conclusion should be a minimum of 5 sentences each.Type your paper according to MLA formatting and style. Please do NOT use borrowed material in your essay.
