The clаdes оf PrоtоstomesLophotrochozoаns develop аs embryos using spiral cleavage. Most live in water and move through it using cilia or contractions of the body's musculature. As lophotrochozoans, the organisms in this superphylum possess either lophophore or trochophore larvae. The lophophore is a feeding structure composed of ciliated tentacles surrounding the mouth. A trochophore is a free-swimming larva characterized by two bands of cilia surrounding a top-like body. The exact relationships between the different phyla are not entirely certain. The superphylum Ecdysozoa contains an incredibly large number of species. This is because it includes two of the most diverse animal groups: Phylum Nematoda (the roundworms) and Phylum Arthropoda (the arthropods). Ecdysozoans' most distinguishing and prominent feature is their cuticle: a tough but flexible exoskeleton that protects these animals from water loss, predators, and other aspects of the external environment. All members of this superphylum periodically molt or shed their cuticles as they grow. After molting, they secrete a new cuticle that will last until their next growth phase. The process of molting and replacing the cuticle is called ecdysis, which derivates the superphylum’s name.
