Pаrt 2 – Cаse Study: Imprоving Cоmmunicаtiоn Skills in the Workplace Background: It’s your first day on the job in a new practice as a veterinary technician. Bernard, another registered technician, takes you to the treatment area and introduces you to Lily, a 4-year-old female French Bulldog who is scheduled to have an ovariohysterectomy today. Tom tells you that he has auscultated Lily’s heart and lungs and found no abnormalities. He also states that they did not perform any preoperative bloodwork, despite the client’s authorization, because the lab machines are not working today. Bernard draws up morphine, a controlled substance, from a bottle he carries in his pocket. “It’s easier to have it on hand than keep it locked up, since we need it for every surgery patient,” Bernard tells you. He administers the morphine as a pre-anesthetic as you restrain Lily, then shortly afterward he gives the intravenous induction agent. Bernard intubates Lily, attaches her to the anesthesia machine, then clips and scrubs her abdomen. Finally, Bernard calls Dr. Jimenez on her cell phone to let her know that the patient is ready for surgery; the doctor is just pulling into the parking lot. Dr. Jimenez scrubs in and begins the surgery. During the procedure, Lily develops respiratory apnea. Bernard does not notice immediately, because he is texting other staff members to find coverage for another employee who has called in sick. Bernard checks on Lily after 15 minutes of anesthesia and discovers her heart has stopped. Despite CPR efforts, Lily cannot be revived. Later that day, Dr. Jimenez tells the client that nothing could have been done to prevent the tragedy; Lily is simply one of those unlucky patients who had an unforeseen complication with anesthesia.
