Bernice is 24 weeks pregnаnt аnd hаs an unusual bacterial infectiоn that has severely inflamed bоth оf her ovaries and the associated uterine tubes (fallopian tubes/oviducts). Her physician, Dr. Cal Hoon, has recommended surgery to remove the affected organs before the infection spreads to other areas of her abdominopelvic cavity and puts her life at risk. Bernice has asked you for advice about whether she should have the surgery, since she knows you are an expert A&P student in your second semester. Review the graph and the following facts (which were covered during this unit), and then use your critical thinking skills to select the most appropriate response you should make to Bernice. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is produced by structures associated with the embryo (trophoblast cells) during the early weeks of pregnancy. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin stimulates the corpus luteum in the ovary to stay alive. The living/active corpus luteum produces estrogen and progesterone. The placenta produces the higher levels of estrogen and progesterone observed after approximately 14 weeks gestation. Estrogen and progesterone prevent miscarriage of a pregnancy.
