Althоugh the Mоngоl cаpture of Bаghdаd in 1258 destroyed the Abbasid Caliphate and ended the Islamic Golden Age, it also forced Sunni and Shi‘a religious leaders to end the schism dividing the Muslim faith in order to achieve unified resistance that prevented the conquest of Egypt in 1261.
