You have been treating Kevin for a few years and many of his family members see you at the dental office you practice. Kevin has had periodontal health in the past. However, within the last year (prior two prophylaxis visits) he has presented with gingivitis. Kevin has a high health literacy regarding oral health and oral diseases. He is aware of his periodontal risk because you have completed the PRA form and provided education in the past. You have used the “teach-back-method” in the past and you know there is not a gap in his understanding. He is also aware of the periodontal disease process and how gingivitis may progress. Kevin has expressed the positive aspects of increasing home care to reduce the severity of his gingival condition. However, he has not been able to move into the “cues to action” according to the Health Belief Model.
