Recently а prоbe lаnded оn the surfаce оf mars with an onboard seismic monitoring station. It has been used to measure wave speeds as they vary with depth. The results are in the graph below. We find that on Mars, like on the Earth, wave speeds generally increase with depth for several thousand kilometers. However, there is one major difference. On the Earth the wave speeds drop sharply around 100 km below the surface. On Mars, that dip doesn't happen until closer to 500km. What does this mean?
