The owner and family patriarch, his father Tywin Lannister, told him that, if he expects to inherit Casterly Rock, Jaime cannot continue to work for their bitter rival, Kingsguard. For showing loyalty and joining the firm, Tywin gives Jaime a $1 million signing bonus and starts Jaime out at $150,000 per year, all in salary with no retirement. Tywin explains: "Jaime, you will inherit Casterly Rock one day and that is all the retirement money you will ever need." In June 2010, Jaime celebrates by purchasing a swanky $1 million house for himself using all of his bonus. Casterly Rock gives Jaime a big office and lets him hire his very own secretary. He interviews many people and hires the most beautiful, Ms. Cersei Baratheon. She earns $75,000 in salary with no retirement. Cersei is a terrible secretary, but she turns out to be amazing with clients. Jaime starts taking Cersei to dinners with clients. One thing leads to another, and Jaime and Cersei start having an affair in December 2011. Tywin is furious when he learns of the affair in June 2012. He tells Jaime to "Stop your affair with that secretary now! Have you not heard of #MeToo? Sexual harassment suits are expensive." Tywin institutes a fraternization and nepotism policy going forward, meaning that two employees cannot marry or have a sexual relationship. Jaime and Cersei continue seeing each other secretly and fall madly in love. Tywin doesn't notice. Having a secret affair takes energy, time and is tiring. So Jaime demands that Cersei move in with him but keep it on the "down low," out of sight of others. Cersei says that she will move in with Jaime, but "I'll be damned if it will be a secret." They move in together in December 2012. She begins wearing a simple gold band on her ring finger but never tells anyone why. Customers start asking for Cersei by name; taking Cersei to dinners has really paid off. Tywin is so pleased with the business growth that, in January 2013, he makes Cersei an account manager in her own right and pays her $100,000 a year, with a retirement benefit of $25,000 deposited into a retirement account for her after each full year worked, which vests immediately. Jaime is now making $200,000 per year but still gets no retirement--he will inherit the business eventually. Jaime is certain Tywin will fire both of them if he finds out about them living together. Cersei's power in the firm grows with all the business she brings in, and she starts to demand more of Jaime. In June 2014, Cersei says "I am sick of sneaking around. I want the deed to the house in my name. I want children. I want access to your bank account. I want it all. Just like we were married." Jaime stalls for time, fearing his father's wrath On New Year's Day, January 1, 2015, Cersei learns she is pregnant, and Jaime is so excited: "I have always wanted a boy, I hope it is a boy." Cersei demands that Jaime tell his father. Jaime promises to tell Tywin about their relationship after the March quarterly reports are in. Jaime soothes Cersei's immediate demand that he call his father with the news by agreeing to put the title to the house in the names of "Jaime Lannister & Cersei Lannister." He also gives her access to his savings and checking bank accounts. In return, Cersei agrees not to use Jaime's name in public as long as he tells his father. This new arrangement works well for Cersei—she spends everything she earns but Jaime saves his money, so now she has ready access to funds when she wants to shop for home furnishings on Etsy. Jaime never questions her spending. In the Spring of 2015, Jaime attempts to tell Tywin about his relationship and the pregnancy. But every time Jaime starts to tell his father, Tywin is in a foul mood. So Jaime says nothing to Tywin. Predictably, by May 2015, Cersei is showing a "baby bump"—it is now obvious that she is pregnant. The family gets together at Tywin's mansion for Memorial Day 4 and Tywin sees instantly that Cersei is pregnant. He immediately suspects that Jaime and Cersei have never stopped having an affair, and roars, "Get out of my house, both of you! Cersei, you are fired! You have brought great shame to this family." Stung by his anger, Cersei screams back, "Say goodbye to your firm, old man! I am taking your clients with me!" She storms out. Cersei starts planning to open her own business, "The Lion and Stag, Ltd." as soon as the baby is born and she is back in shape. Jaime stays on at the firm but Casterly Rock's business declines now that Cersei has quit. The baby, Joffrey Lannister, is born on October 6, 2015. Cersei instantly regrets not being married and says to Jaime she wants more now that "the stupid fraternization and nepotism policy no longer applies." She demands a wedding, but she says that she will not take his name because it will confuse her new clients once she opens the firm. Feeling pressured, Jaime says, "if making Joffrey legitimate means so much to you, we can have a small church affair." Jaime urges Cersei to invite friends to what they called a "celebration of our new family" in November, 2015. Jaime arranges for his childhood friend Coy Moore to preside over the November family gathering, even though Jaime knows Coy is no longer a minister after having been stripped of religious authority for something in the distant past. Cersei had heard rumors about Coy and always wondered if he was a legitimate minister. The whole day is lovely and Joffrey is baptized that day. Cersei realizes that "changing diapers is not for me." Jaime is working long hours to prop up his father's failing firm and provides little help. Jaime is also aggravated because he now makes only $150,000 with the decline of business. They hire a nanny, Sansa Stark. By December 2015, two months of "maternity leave" seems enough to Cersei and she is raring to open her new firm. Cersei needs a small investment for the initial year's lease of space, so she takes the $30,000 in retirement funds she received (after the tax penalty) when she left Casterly Rock and withdraws another $30,000 from Jaime's bank account to cover those expenses. Cersei opens The Lion and Stag, Ltd. to great fanfare on January 1, 2016. All her clients flock to her, and Cersei's business starts off at over $1 million per year in profit. She pays herself $200,000 per year because that is what Jaime used to earn, and pours the rest back into the business. She says, "I should have quit Casterly long ago." As Jaime's business sags, he starts to worry about Cersei being able to make a claim on the house or any inheritance if they ever break up. Because of the house's expense, Jaime wants to ensure that the house will always be his and Joffrey's home, whatever happens with Cersei. In June 2016, he consults his old friend and attorney, Bronn Blackwater, who had attended the family celebration at the church. Bronn says that if Jaime never marries Cersei, this should ensure that the house would always remain Jaime's because he paid for it alone. Jaime tells Bronn about Coy not being a minister but neglects to tell Bronn about the deed. Bronn warns Jaime that New Franklin recognizes common law marriage, too, so "Let her wear a ring if you want, but don't wear one yourself and never call her your wife. Keep it clean, Jaime." Jaime says, "Don't worry, I have never called her my wife, I am not that dumb." In early 2019, Cersei becomes bored with Jaime. In fact, she prefers spending time with her new client, Jaime's cousin, Lancel Lannister. She and Lancel have long dinners together, and one thing leads to another and they become romantically involved. She consults an attorney, Maester Qyburn, who points out that New Franklin recognizes common law marriage. He says, "Cersei, Don't be stupid, I know you have been wearing a ring, but whatever you do, do not call Jaime your husband. Don't put things in your joint names and don't use his last name. Keep it clean, Cersei." Cersei says nothing about the deed. She goes home, opens Jaime's safe, and tears up the copy of the deed. She forgets that there is a recorded deed at the county offices. She and Lancel see each other when Cersei slips out in the evenings. In January 2020, Cersei and Jaime have a big fight over dinner. Jaime asks, "Cersei, what is the matter, are we good? You used to be so happy. Now you spend evenings at work. What gives?" Cersei says, "You're boring, Jaime. I love my work and new firm. I really want nothing to do with you. Joffrey is difficult. I really find him tiring. I have moved on." Cersei walks out and does not return again. She sees Joffrey once in the next twelve months, for Mother's Day, because she did not want to spend it alone. Jaime is devastated. In June 2021, he calls her to ask her back and promises to take care of Joffrey so that "he is never a bother to you." Cersei senses weakness and says she will consider coming back if Jaime signs an agreement, which reads: I, Jaime Lannister, hereby agree that the deed executed in the names of "Jaime Lannister & Cersei Lannister" was a joke and that the property located at 1615 Kingstree Road, New Franklin will, in the event of a break-up, be considered my sole property. I promise in the event of break-up to make no claims on Cersei Baratheon. I will assume custody of our child, Joffrey Lannister. We have both been advised by counsel and knowingly waive any right we may otherwise have had. Any modification of this agreement must be made in writing. In July 2021, Cersei tells Jaime that if "you want another chance, you will sign the agreement now." Jaime cries at first but resigns himself and signs the agreement. But Cersei still does not return home. For the next year and a half, Jaime spends his evenings taking care of Joffrey's every need after Sansa, the nanny, leaves. Cersei's business prospers financially, and, and her profit hits $2 million per year. Cersei pays herself $250,000 per year. In 2023, Jaime's father Tywin falls ill so Jaime does not push Cersei to return. He tries to spend as much time with Tywin and Joffrey as possible. Tywin dies April 15, 2023, leaving Jaime $5 million. Jaime puts his inheritance in a new savings account that is just in his name because he felt like large amounts of money had been missing in the past. The firm is no longer viable and closes. Cersei does not even come to the funeral. With Casterly Rock out of the picture, Cersei's firm, "The Lion and Stag, Ltd." Is worth a lot more. Cersei gets a professional appraisal of the firm and learns it is valued at $5 million. She tells Lancel, "this is the day I am finally rich! I have already parked all the profit I have made from the business, $3 million, in a bank account in the Caymens, but I made sure Jaime does not know about it." Finally, in May 2023, Jaime comes to you for advice. He is furious that Cersei did not come to his father's funeral and now wants a divorce. He wants to "clean her out and make her pay."
