A ten year old girl is getting her annual check up with her pediatrician.  Her father comments on how much the young girl is eating and drinking throughout the day.  Also she regularly gets sent home with notes from her teacher complaining about the child constantly needed to visit the restroom.  The pediatrician orders a blood draw and urine sample.  Her results come back as positive for glucose in the urine, and her blood results show high glucose levels but no insulin present. What is your diagnosis of this patient? Be as specific as possible.

A middle-aged man is brought to the emergency room unconscious.  His wife says that he has “been eating, drinking, and peeing like crazy.”   Blood is drawn and urine tested, the labs come back as follows: Blood glucose 664 (high) Blood insulin 28 (high) Glucose present in urine What is your diagnosis?  Be as specific as possible on the diagnosis and describe how you came to this conclusion.   **For some bonus, describe why blood glucose levels elevate so quickly to cause diabetic shock.  What is happening in the body to cause this even when patients are not taking in more sugars?
