A true story: Your instructor went to a wedding of two economics graduate students. The father of the bride gave a toast where he described a conversation he had with the groom in which he thought some economics had been applied. The father of the bride asked the groom-to-be if he was going to go through with the marriage. The groom (a Ph.D. student) responded, “I’ve got too much invested in this relationship and in this wedding to not go through with it!” Analyze this statement (i.e., explain why your instructor was shocked that an economics Ph.D. student would make such a statement).

A true story: In June 2019 your instructor and his wife had a birthday party for his two oldest children at Sk8away in Topeka, KS. The price for the party was $170 for an hour and a half of exclusive use of the facility. It included skating (and skate rental) for up to 20 individuals, 20 ice cream sandwiches and paper plates/napkins/plastic silverware for 20 people. If we wanted to have more than 20 people skate, it would cost $12 per person for each individual that was over 20 skaters. They would be able to skate and get an ice cream sandwich and paper plate/napkin/plastic silverware. If a person came to the party and did not skate, there was not an extra charge if they made the group be over 20 persons. A non-skater did not receive an ice cream sandwich nor paper plate/napkin/plastic silverware. The facility had three employees that were present at the party. One coordinated all of the non-skating portions, one that coordinated the skating portion and one that was supervising. These three employees were sufficient to handle any size party and Sk8away did not need to know how many people were coming before we showed up. What thoughts do you have on Sk8away’s pricing? Why do you think they price the way they do? Would you recommend a change in their pricing? Why or why not?
